in Rift

In the largest jump since January, the rift in the Larsen C Ice Shelf has grown an additional 17 km (11 miles) between May 25 and May 31 2017.
This has moved the rift tip to within 13 km (8 miles) of breaking all the way through to the ice front, producing one of the largest ever recorded icebergs.
The rift tip appears also to have turned significantly towards the ice front, indicating that the time of calving is probably very close.

Antarctic ice rift close to calving, after growing 17km in 6 days
The rift in the Larsen C ice shelf in Antarctica has grown by 17km in the last few days and is now only 13km from the ice front, indicating that calving of an iceberg is probably very close, Swansea University researchers revealed after studying the latest satellite data.

The rift in Larsen C is likely to lead to one of the largest icebergs ever recorded.  It is being monitored by researchers from the UK's Project Midas, led by Swansea University.

Larsen C iceberg accelerates ahead of calving

In another sign that the iceberg calving is imminent, the soon-to-be-iceberg part of Larsen C Ice Shelf has tripled in speed to more than ten meters per day between 24th and 27th June 2017. The iceberg remains attached to the ice shelf, but its outer end is moving at the highest speed ever recorded on this ice shelf. We still can't tell when calving will occur - it could be hours, days or weeks - but this is a notable departure from previous observations.

The most recent observations on 27th June do not cover the rift tip, but a low resolution Sentinel-1 image of just after midnight on 28th June shows clearly that the iceberg remains attached to the ice shelf at its western end - for now.
When it calves, the Larsen C Ice Shelf will lose more than 10% of its area to leave the ice front at its most retreated position ever recorded; this event will fundamentally change the landscape of the Antarctic Peninsula.

We have previously shown that the new configuration will be less stable than it was prior to the rift, and that Larsen C may eventually follow the example of its neighbour Larsen B, which disintegrated in 2002 following a similar rift-induced calving event.
The MIDAS Project will continue to monitor the development of the rift and assess its ongoing impact on the ice shelf. Further updates will be available on this blog, and on our Twitter feed

Comparison of speeds between Sentinel-1 image mosaics in early and late June 2017. The early mosaic combines displacements on the inner shelf measured between 6th and 12th June with similar ones on the outer shelf measured between 3rd and 15th June. The recent mosaic combines inner shelf displacements up to 24th June with outer shelf displacements only 3 days later highlighting a significant acceleration over those three days.

New Sentinel-1 data today continues to show the rift opening more rapidly. We can't claim iceberg calving yet, but it won't be long now.....

Throughout the sunlit months of late 2016 and early 2017, scientists watched closely as a crack grew across the Larsen C ice shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula. The rift, which threatens to create one of the largest icebergs ever recorded, was visible throughout austral summer in natural-color satellite imagery and in aerial photographs.

Now the crack is shrouded in winter darkness again. But even in the dark, there are satellite instruments that allow scientists to "see" the rift.
On June 17, 2017, the Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) on Landsat 8 captured a false-color image of the crack and the surrounding ice shelf. It shows the relative warmth or coolness of the landscape. Orange depicts where the surface is the warmest, most notably the areas of open ocean and of water topped by thin sea ice. Light blues and whites are the coldest areas, spanning most of the ice shelf and some areas of sea ice. Dark blue and purple areas are in the mid-range.

The blue hue of the crack indicates that relatively warm ocean water is not far below the ice surface. No part of the crack appears as warm as ocean areas, likely because there is a soup of floating, broken ice pieces from the rift's walls and bits of sea ice sitting atop the water-filled crack. (This mixture can act as a weak glue, but it also prevents the rift from healing.)

https://eoimages.gsfc.nasa.gov/images/imagerecords/90000/90481/larsenc_locator_2017179.png

As of May 31, 2017, the tip of the crack was just 13 kilometers (8 miles) from the ice front. Then between June 24-27, the speed of rift growth tripled.
These numbers were calculated by scientists with the UK-based Project MIDAS, who have been monitoring the rift by radar through the winter. The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) on the Sentinel-1A satellite captured an image (below) of the crack on June 28, 2017.

https://eoimages.gsfc.nasa.gov/images/imagerecords/90000/90481/larsenc_sar_2017179.jpg

The ice near the leading edge, or tip, of the rift is being weakened by winds that generally blow from the west. These winds interact with the surface texture of the shelf and push it eastward.
The oscillations of tides and the pull of the Weddell Gyre (ocean currents) add to the stress on the weakening ice shelf.

It's not possible to say when the shelf will calve ice or break up. According to Project MIDAS, it could be "hours, days or weeks," but the recent acceleration marks a "notable departure from previous observations."

Description
Part of Antarctica's Larsen C ice shelf will soon break away, spawning one of the largest icebergs on record.
The crack in the ice shelf, which led to the birth of the iceberg, was monitored closely using radar images from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites.

ESA's CryoSat mission has been used to measure the thickness of the eventual berg:
on average, it is 190 m thick, but at its thickest point it has a keel 210 m below the ocean surface, and it contains about 1155 cubic km of ice.

Larsen C rift branches as it comes within 5 km of calving
by Adrian Luckman, Martin O'Leary, and Project MIDAS

As the Larsen C ice shelf moves closer to calving one of the largest icebergs on record, there are clear signs of changes in the part of the shelf which is about to calve.
In late June 2017, the soon-to-be iceberg tripled in speed, producing the fastest flow speeds ever recorded on Larsen C, and seemed to be on the verge of breaking free.

The latest data from 6th July reveal that, in a release of built-up stresses, the rift branched several times. Using data from ESA's Sentinel-1 satellites, we can see that there are multiple rift tips now within 5 km of the ice edge.
We expect that these rifts will lead to the formation of several smaller icebergs, as well as the large iceberg which we estimate will have an area of 5,800 sq km.
Despite this, the iceberg remains attached to the shelf by a thin band of ice. It is remarkable how the moment of calving is still keeping us waiting.

Iceberg A-68
Calves off Larsen-C Ice Shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula
July 13, 2017 SUITLAND, MD —T

The U.S National Ice Center (USNIC) confirmed a new iceberg has calved from the Larsen-C ice shelf on the east side of the Antarctic Peninsula. This iceberg, named A-68, is located at 67???' South, 60???' West, in the Weddell Sea. The iceberg measures 84 nautical miles on its longest axis and 25 nautical miles on its widest axis, and is slightly smaller than the state of Delaware.

A-68 was confirmed by USNIC Ice Analysts using the Sentinel-1 image (shown below) and longwave infrared imagery from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the NOAA/NASA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite.
A-68 is expected to drift east-northeast along the Antarctic Peninsula in the Weddell Gyre over the next several months. It will likely fracture into smaller bergs before drifting far enough north to enter the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.

Iceberg names are derived from the Antarctic quadrant in which they were originally sighted. The quadrants are divided counter-clockwise in the following manner:
A = 0-90W (Bellingshausen/Weddell Sea)
B = 90W-180 (Amundsen/Eastern Ross Sea)
C = 180-90E (Western Ross Sea/Wilkesland)
D = 90E-0 (Amery/Eastern Weddell Sea)

When first sighted, an iceberg's point of origin is documented by USNIC. The letter of the quadrant, along with a sequential number, is assigned to the iceberg. For example, C-19 is sequentially the 19th iceberg tracked by USNIC in Antarctica between 180-90E (Quadrant C). Icebergs with letter suffixes have calved from already named icebergs, where the letters are added in sequential order. For example, C-19D is the 4th iceberg to calve off the original C-19iceberg.

Iceberg positions are analyzed weekly and are available on the USNIC webpage at:

Massale ijsberg kiest zee

IJsplaat Larsen C

https://images.nrc.nl/GvuHQ0bZc02B8dTohyHHUimp89k=/1280x/filters:no_upscale%28%29/s3/static.nrc.nl/bvhw/files/2017/07/data18529541-e5f794.png

https://images.nrc.nl/5LV8VfoNXyFTf3rBQC40GLZ0V6U=/1920x/smart/filters:no_upscale()/s3/static.nrc.nl/bvhw/files/2017/07/data18528150-cb05f7.png

Larsen C is zo'n ijsplaat.

Larsen C responds to the calving of A68
On July 12 2017, data from the Sentinel-1 satellite confirmed the calving from the Larsen C Ice Shelf of Iceberg A68, a slab of ice 5,800 km in area and weighing more than 1 trillion tonnes.
New Sentinel-1 interferometry data from July 18 now shows how the remaining ice shelf is responding to the calving event.

Rifts (dark curving lines in the image), already present before A68 detached, are still in evidence and show where further small icebergs will probably be created. In a further development, a new rift appears to be extending northwards (towards the top left) and may result in further ice shelf area loss. Although this new rift will probably soon turn towards the shelf edge, there may be a risk that it will continue on to Bawden Ice Rise, a crucial point of stabilisation for Larsen C Ice Shelf.
